Lunar lunacy

While I share others’ dismay over the public’s seemingly dismissive attitude towards scientific research, I still don’t think anyone should laud Newt Gingrich’s plan for a permanent lunar colony any time soon.

The plan is disingenuous (Gingrich was clearly pandering to the Florida audience); it is hypocritical (he consistently denigrates his opponents for not being as fiscally conservative as he claims to be); it is hubristic (he claimed it would become the 51st U.S. state); it is narcissistic (he declared it would be completed not if elected president, but by the end of his second term).

Gingrich was rightly criticized – not so much for what he said, but rather for the overall context within which he said it.
